Geography
Sidhi district lies on the southern edge of the Vindhya Range, with the Son river flowing through it. The terrain consists of hills, plateaus, and forested tracts. The district shares boundaries with Singrauli district to the east, Shahdol and Anuppur districts to the south, Rewa district to the west, and the state of Uttar Pradesh to the north. A significant share of the district's area is under forest cover, supporting a variety of wildlife.
Administration
The district is divided into several tehsils and development blocks for revenue and administrative purposes. The principal towns include Sidhi, Churhat, Majhauli, Kusmi, and Rampur Naikin. Administration is led by a District Collector, with a Superintendent of Police heading the district police, and a Chief Executive Officer of the Zila Panchayat overseeing rural local self-government.
History
Historically, the area formed part of the princely state of Rewa under the Baghel dynasty during the colonial period. After Indian independence in 1947, Rewa state was integrated into the Vindhya Pradesh union, which was merged into Madhya Pradesh on the reorganisation of states in 1956. Sidhi was carved out as a separate district from Rewa.
In 2008, the district was further reorganised when Singrauli district was carved out of Sidhi to form a separate administrative unit, primarily owing to the rapid industrial and mining development around Singrauli town.
Demographics
The population of Sidhi district is largely rural, with agriculture being the dominant occupation. The district has a substantial Scheduled Tribe population, including the Gond, Kol, Baiga, and Panika communities. Hindi is the principal language, with the Bagheli dialect widely spoken in everyday use.
Economy
The economy is predominantly agrarian, with crops such as paddy, wheat, pulses, and oilseeds being commonly cultivated. Forest produce, including tendu leaves used for bidi making, contributes to rural livelihoods. The district also has coal reserves, and parts of the wider Singrauli coalfield extend into its vicinity. Power generation, mining, and associated industries play a notable role in the regional economy.

Sidhi is connected by road to Rewa, Singrauli, and Shahdol. National and state highways pass through the district, linking it with the broader road network of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Rail connectivity historically required travel via Rewa or Singrauli, with later projects extending rail access closer to the district headquarters.
