Shujalpur is a city and municipal council in the Shajapur district of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. It falls within the Ujjain division and serves as the headquarters of Shujalpur tehsil. The town is an established agricultural trading centre on the Malwa plateau and lies on the Bhopal–Ujjain railway corridor.

Geography

Shujalpur is situated on the Malwa plateau in central Madhya Pradesh. The terrain around the town is gently undulating and supports the black cotton soils characteristic of Malwa, which are well suited to wheat, soybean, gram and pulses. The Newaj river basin drains parts of the surrounding tehsil.

Civic administration

The town is administered by a municipal council that is responsible for local services such as water supply, sanitation, street lighting and intra-town roads. For revenue and general administration, Shujalpur functions as a tehsil headquarters under the Shajapur district collectorate.

Transport

Shujalpur lies on the western railway route connecting Bhopal with Ujjain, and the Shujalpur railway station is a stop for several passenger and express trains operating in the Bhopal–Ratlam corridor of West Central Railway. Road links connect the town to Shajapur, Sehore, Ashta and Bhopal. The nearest major airport is at Bhopal.

Economy

The economy of Shujalpur is largely agrarian, with the surrounding region producing soybean, wheat, pulses and oilseeds. The town hosts a regulated agricultural produce market (krishi upaj mandi), which is among the trading points for soybean and grain in the Malwa belt. Allied activities include oil milling, dal milling and warehousing.

Demographics and language

Hindi is the primary language used in administration and education, while the local population also speaks Malvi, the regional dialect of the Malwa plateau. The town has a mixed Hindu and Muslim population with smaller Jain and other communities, reflecting the broader composition of the Shajapur district.

Shujalpur has government and private schools affiliated to the Madhya Pradesh Board of Secondary Education, along with a government degree college that provides undergraduate courses under the affiliation system used by state universities in Madhya Pradesh.
