Background and Early Life
Gill was born into a Sikh farming family in Chak Khere Wala village near Fazilka, in the Punjab–Rajasthan border region. His father, Lakhwinder Singh Gill, who had aspired to play cricket himself, moved the family to Mohali to facilitate his son's training. Gill trained at the Punjab Cricket Association ground and later at the cricket academy in Chandigarh.
He came to national attention in age-group cricket, scoring heavily for Punjab in the Vijay Merchant Trophy and Cooch Behar Trophy. In 2017, he and Nirmal Singh added 587 runs for the second wicket in the Vijay Merchant Trophy, a record stand that drew wide notice.
Junior and Domestic Career
Gill made his first-class debut for Punjab in the 2017–18 Ranji Trophy season. He was a central member of the India side that won the 2018 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup in New Zealand under the captaincy of Prithvi Shaw. Gill was named Player of the Tournament, scoring 372 runs including a century against Pakistan in the semi-final.
Indian Premier League
Gill was signed by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the 2018 IPL auction. He played for KKR from 2018 to 2021, including the 2021 final, which KKR lost to the Chennai Super Kings. He was retained by the newly formed Gujarat Titans ahead of the 2022 IPL season and was part of the side that won the title in their debut campaign. In the 2023 IPL season he won the Orange Cap, scoring 890 runs—then the second-highest tally in a single IPL season—including three centuries.
International Career
One Day Internationals
Gill made his ODI debut in January 2019 against New Zealand. He cemented his place at the top of the order from 2022 onwards. In January 2023 he scored 208 against New Zealand in Hyderabad, becoming the youngest male batsman to score a double century in ODIs. He was a leading run-scorer in the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup held in India.
Test Cricket
Gill made his Test debut in the 2020–21 Border–Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. He played a key innings of 91 in the fourth-innings chase at the Gabba in Brisbane, which India successfully completed to win the series 2–1. He scored his maiden Test century against Bangladesh at Chattogram in December 2022.
Twenty20 Internationals
Gill made his T20I debut in January 2023 against Sri Lanka. Later that year, he scored 126 not out against New Zealand in Ahmedabad, becoming the second Indian after Rohit Sharma to score a T20I century while opening.
Captaincy
Gill was appointed captain of the Gujarat Titans for the 2024 IPL season, succeeding Hardik Pandya. He has also led India in white-ball assignments, taking over as captain of the T20I side and later the ODI side following the retirements of senior players. He was named Test captain of India in 2025 ahead of the tour of England, succeeding Rohit Sharma.
Style and Significance
Gill is regarded for his orthodox technique, ability to drive on the up, and command of pace bowling. He is considered a successor in the lineage of Indian top-order batsmen including Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma. His rise from age-group cricket to multi-format international captaincy in under a decade has made him a prominent figure in Indian sport.
