Background
The university was created to expand access to higher education in the predominantly tribal districts of eastern Gujarat, including Panch Mahals, Dahod, and surrounding areas. Before its establishment, colleges in this region were affiliated with older universities based in central Gujarat. By creating a dedicated university for the region, the state aimed to consolidate academic administration, improve standards, and respond to local educational needs.
The institution carries the name of Govind Guru (1858–1931), a saint-reformer who organised the Bhil and adivasi communities of the Mewar–Vagad region against social inequities and colonial administration, and is closely associated with the Mangarh hill site on the Gujarat–Rajasthan border.
Academic role
As an affiliating university, Shri Govind Guru University oversees a network of constituent and affiliated colleges that offer undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across disciplines such as arts, commerce, science, education, and professional studies. The university conducts examinations, awards degrees, and frames syllabi for affiliated institutions in its territorial jurisdiction.
Significance
The establishment of the university is regarded as part of a broader policy of decentralising higher education in Gujarat and improving educational outcomes in tribal-majority districts. By naming the university after Govind Guru, the state also sought to recognise the historical contribution of adivasi reform movements to the region's social fabric.
