Background
The Shiv Nadar Foundation was set up by Shiv Nadar, co-founder and chairman emeritus of HCL, to support educational initiatives in India. The foundation's earlier projects include the Vidyagyan Leadership Academy, SSN College of Engineering in Chennai, and Shiv Nadar School. Shiv Nadar University was conceived as a comprehensive, multidisciplinary research university intended to combine a liberal-arts style undergraduate experience with strong programmes in science, engineering and management.
The university was established under an Act of the Uttar Pradesh State Legislature, which granted it the powers of a state private university to award its own degrees. The campus is situated within the Greater Noida region of the National Capital Region, on a residential campus that houses academic blocks, laboratories, hostels and sporting facilities.
