Overview
Shimoga Institute of Medical Sciences, widely referred to as SIMS, is a government medical college and teaching hospital located in Shivamogga, a city in the Malnad region of Karnataka, India. The institution offers undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and serves as a major tertiary healthcare referral centre for the Shivamogga district and the surrounding districts of the Western Ghats belt, including Chikkamagaluru, Uttara Kannada, and Davangere. As a government institution, it operates under the administrative oversight of the Government of Karnataka and is affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Bengaluru, which is the apex body governing medical and allied health education across Karnataka.
Background and Establishment
The institution was established to address the significant gap in tertiary medical care and trained medical professionals in the Malnad and Tulu Nadu hinterland of Karnataka. Prior to its establishment, residents of Shivamogga and surrounding areas had to travel to Bengaluru or Mangaluru for advanced medical treatment. SIMS was conceived as an integrated campus combining a medical college with a large attached teaching hospital, enabling students to receive clinical training alongside their academic coursework within the same campus.
The college is recognised by the National Medical Commission (NMC), formerly the Medical Council of India (MCI), which is the statutory body that regulates medical education and practice in India. Recognition by the NMC is a prerequisite for any medical college to admit students to the MBBS programme and to award degrees that are valid for medical practice in India.
Academics
SIMS offers the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree as its primary undergraduate programme. The MBBS curriculum follows the competency-based medical education framework introduced by the NMC, which emphasises clinical skills, community medicine, and professional ethics alongside traditional preclinical and paraclinical subjects.
At the postgraduate level, the institution offers Doctor of Medicine (MD) and Master of Surgery (MS) programmes across several clinical and non-clinical specialities. Postgraduate training at SIMS involves intensive clinical rotations, research work, and dissertation submission as mandated by RGUHS guidelines.
The academic departments are broadly organised into three phases consistent with the national MBBS curriculum structure: preclinical departments such as Anatomy, Physiology, and Biochemistry; paraclinical departments including Pathology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, and Forensic Medicine; and clinical departments covering Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology, ENT, Psychiatry, Dermatology, and others.
Hospital and Clinical Training
The attached teaching hospital functions as the primary site for clinical training for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. The hospital provides outpatient, inpatient, emergency, and surgical services to a large patient population drawn from Shivamogga and neighbouring districts. The volume and diversity of cases seen at the hospital, including conditions common to the Malnad region such as vector-borne diseases, trauma, and agricultural injuries, provide students with broad clinical exposure.
The hospital operates departments aligned with the academic departments of the college, ensuring that faculty members simultaneously carry out teaching duties and clinical responsibilities. The emergency and casualty services function around the clock, and the hospital maintains intensive care units, operation theatres, labour rooms, and diagnostic facilities including radiology and laboratory services.
Campus and Facilities
The SIMS campus houses the medical college building, the teaching hospital, a central library, lecture halls, dissection halls, laboratories, and residential accommodation for students, interns, and resident doctors. The library maintains a collection of medical textbooks, journals, and digital resources to support academic and research activities. Hostel facilities are available separately for male and female students on or near the campus.
Admissions
Admission to the MBBS programme at SIMS is conducted through the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG), which is the single national entrance examination for undergraduate medical admissions in India. Government seats are allotted through the centralised counselling process managed by the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) for state quota seats and by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) for All India Quota seats. Postgraduate admissions are similarly conducted through NEET-PG followed by RGUHS and KEA counselling.
Student Life
Students at SIMS participate in academic clubs, cultural events, and sports activities organised through the college. The institution observes national health days and conducts community outreach camps in rural areas around Shivamogga as part of the community medicine curriculum. The intern batch undertakes rural postings as part of the compulsory rotating internship that follows the MBBS degree.
