Background
Shilpa Shetty was born on 8 June 1975 into a Tuluva family with roots in coastal Karnataka. Her father, Surendra Shetty, ran a business in plastic containers, while her mother, Sunanda Shetty, was associated with bangle manufacturing. She grew up in Mumbai and studied at St. Anthony Girls' High School, Chembur, and later at Podar College. Her younger sister, Shamita Shetty, also pursued a career as an actress in Hindi cinema.
Before entering films, Shetty modelled in print and television advertisements during the early 1990s, including a notable campaign for a soft drink brand which brought her early visibility.
Film career
Debut and early years (1993–1999)
Shetty made her film debut with Baazigar (1993), directed by Abbas–Mustan and starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. Her performance, though in a supporting role, was well received and earned her a Filmfare nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She followed this with films such as Aag (1994), Main Khiladi Tu Anari (1994) opposite Akshay Kumar, and Himmatwala. During the mid-1990s she also worked in Tamil and Telugu cinema, appearing in films like Mr. Romeo (1996).
Established phase (2000–2007)
Shetty's career gained renewed momentum with Dhadkan (2000), directed by Dharmesh Darshan and co-starring Akshay Kumar and Suniel Shetty, which became one of her best-known performances. Subsequent films included Rishtey (2002), Garv: Pride and Honour (2004), and Phir Milenge (2004), in which she played a woman living with HIV; her performance in the latter earned her the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Performance. She also featured in commercially successful ensemble films such as Dus (2005) and Apne (2007). The item song "Shut Up & Bounce" from Dostana (2008) marked one of her later prominent on-screen appearances.
Later work
After a long break following her marriage in 2009, Shetty returned to acting with Hungama 2 (2021), directed by Priyadarshan, and Nikamma (2022). She has also appeared in web series and continued to take on selective film projects.
Television and reality shows
Shetty participated in the fifth series of the British reality programme Celebrity Big Brother on Channel 4 in 2007, which she won. Her time on the show drew international attention due to a racial controversy involving fellow contestant Jade Goody, prompting wide media coverage in India and the United Kingdom and statements from political figures in both countries.
In India, she has served as a judge on several reality television shows, including Nach Baliye, Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa, Super Dancer (multiple seasons on Sony Entertainment Television), and India's Got Talent.
Yoga, fitness, and business ventures
Shetty released the DVD Shilpa's Yoga in 2007, which sold widely in the United Kingdom and India and contributed to her public image as a yoga and wellness advocate. She has subsequently launched fitness and wellness applications, including a mobile app focused on yoga, diet, and lifestyle content.
She has been associated with various entrepreneurial ventures, including investments in restaurants and consumer brands. Along with her husband Raj Kundra, she was a co-owner of the Rajasthan Royals franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL) during the early seasons of the tournament. She has also endorsed numerous consumer brands across categories such as cosmetics, apparel, and food.
Personal life
Shetty married businessman Raj Kundra on 22 November 2009. The couple have two children: a son, Viaan Raj Kundra (born 2012), and a daughter, Samisha Shetty Kundra (born 2020 via surrogacy). She is a practising Hindu and has often spoken publicly about yoga, vegetarianism, and Ayurvedic practices.
