Background
SKUAST-Jammu was established to serve the agricultural education and research needs of the Jammu division, which has distinct agro-climatic zones ranging from the sub-tropical plains of the Shivalik foothills to the temperate and intermediate zones of the Pir Panjal range. The university was created by bifurcating the earlier unified Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, which had been set up to cover the whole of Jammu and Kashmir, into two separate state universities — one for the Kashmir Valley (SKUAST-Kashmir) and one for Jammu.
The university follows the land-grant pattern of agricultural universities in India, integrating teaching, research and extension under a single institutional framework, on lines recommended by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).
Academic structure
SKUAST-Jammu offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes through several constituent faculties and colleges, broadly covering:
- Agriculture
- Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry
- Basic Sciences
- Forestry
- Biotechnology
- Agricultural Engineering
The main campus is located at Chatha on the outskirts of Jammu city, with additional campuses, research stations and Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) spread across the districts of the Jammu division to address region-specific agricultural issues.
Research and extension
The university operates a network of regional research stations and KVKs that work on crop improvement, horticulture (notably citrus, mango and stone fruits in the Jammu region), livestock development, soil and water management, and post-harvest technology. Extension activities include farmer training, demonstration of improved practices, and dissemination of region-suited crop varieties and animal husbandry techniques.
Significance
As the principal state agricultural university for the Jammu region, SKUAST-Jammu plays a central role in human resource development for the agriculture sector, technology generation for local farming systems, and policy support for the union territory administration. Its work is particularly relevant for the rain-fed kandi belt, basmati-growing tracts of the Jammu plains, and the temperate zones of districts such as Doda, Kishtwar and Rajouri.
