Overview
Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, Jammu (SKUAST-J) is an agricultural university located in the Jammu Division of the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. It was constituted as a separate university for the Jammu Division through an amendment to the SKUAST Act, 1982.
The original Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST) was established in 1982, with its headquarters at Srinagar. It was named after the Kashmiri leader Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, popularly known as Sher-e-Kashmir. At the time of its founding, the university had jurisdiction over the entire State of Jammu and Kashmir. Agricultural education, research and extension training units were transferred to SKUAST from various development departments of the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir State.
In 1998–99, the territorial jurisdiction of the university was redefined by amending the SKUAST Act, 1982. Under the amendment, a separate agricultural university was established for the Jammu Division and named the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu (SKUAST-J), with its territorial jurisdiction extending to the entire Jammu Division. The parent university was correspondingly renamed the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K).
SKUAST-J undertakes teaching, research and extension activities in the field of agricultural sciences and allied disciplines within its area of jurisdiction.
