Background and early life
Shardul Thakur was born in Palghar, a town in the Konkan region of Maharashtra, on 16 October 1991. He took up cricket in his early teens and travelled long distances from Palghar to attend training and matches in Mumbai, a commute that became a defining part of his early cricketing journey. He was coached by Dinesh Lad, who is also known for mentoring Rohit Sharma, at the Swami Vivekanand International School in Kandivali, Mumbai.
Thakur first attracted attention in age-group cricket when he hit six sixes in an over during a Harris Shield inter-school match, an event that drew comparisons with other Mumbai school cricket prodigies.
Domestic career
Thakur made his first-class debut for Mumbai in the 2012–13 Ranji Trophy season. Over the following years he established himself as a leading new-ball bowler in the Mumbai attack, contributing to the team's Ranji Trophy title wins. He also represented West Zone in the Duleep Trophy and has been a consistent wicket-taker on the domestic circuit.
In the Indian Premier League (IPL), Thakur has played for the Kings XI Punjab, Rising Pune Supergiant, Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders and Lucknow Super Giants franchises across various seasons, primarily as a death-overs specialist.
International career
One Day Internationals
Thakur made his ODI debut in 2017 against Sri Lanka. After an injury-marred start, he gradually became a regular member of India's limited-overs squads, particularly valued for his ability to break partnerships in the middle overs.
Test cricket
He made his Test debut against the West Indies in Hyderabad in October 2018 but was forced off the field after bowling only a few deliveries due to a groin injury. His first significant Test contribution came in the 2020–21 Border–Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, where he played a memorable role at the Gabba in Brisbane, taking wickets and scoring valuable runs in both innings to help India secure a historic series win on Australian soil.
Thakur followed this with notable performances in England in 2021, including twin half-centuries in the Oval Test, becoming one of the few Indian fast bowlers to achieve such a feat in England. He also took five-wicket hauls in Test cricket, including against South Africa.
T20 Internationals
He has been part of India's T20I squads at various points and was named in India's squad for the 2021 ICC Men's T20 World Cup held in the United Arab Emirates and Oman.
Style and significance
Thakur is regarded as a useful seam-bowling all-rounder who often picks up wickets at crucial junctures, even if he is not always the most economical bowler. His batting in the lower order has produced several match-defining innings, and his ability to play impact roles with both bat and ball in away Test matches in Australia, England and South Africa has been a notable feature of his international career. He is among the cricketers who have emerged from the Mumbai school cricket system, continuing the city's long tradition of producing Test cricketers.
