Background
The Sharda Group of Institutions, the founding body of the university, has its origins in technical education ventures established in the National Capital Region. With the expansion of higher education in Uttar Pradesh in the 2000s, the group sought university status under the state's framework for private universities. Sharda University was subsequently constituted by an Act of the Uttar Pradesh State Legislature in 2009.
The campus is situated in Knowledge Park III, Greater Noida, an area earmarked by the Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority for educational institutions. The locality hosts several other private universities and professional colleges, making it one of the prominent education clusters in western Uttar Pradesh.
Academics
The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes across a broad range of disciplines. Its constituent schools cover areas such as engineering and technology, medical sciences and research, dental sciences, nursing, pharmacy, business studies, law, architecture and planning, basic sciences and research, humanities and social sciences, education, and design. The medical college operates an attached teaching hospital on the campus.
Sharda University admits students from across India and also enrolls a significant number of international students, particularly from Asian and African countries, through its international admissions cell.
Campus
The main campus in Greater Noida houses academic blocks for the various schools, residential hostels, sports facilities, libraries, and the Sharda Hospital, which functions as the teaching hospital for the medical and allied health programmes.
Significance
As one of the larger private universities in the Delhi–NCR region, Sharda University is part of the wider expansion of private higher education in Uttar Pradesh that followed state legislation enabling self-financed universities. Its multidisciplinary structure, combining professional and liberal disciplines on a single campus, situates it among the integrated private universities established in India during the late 2000s.
