Overview

Shakti Samanta (13 January 1926 – 9 April 2009) was an Indian film director and producer associated with Hindi and Bengali cinema. In 1957, he founded the production banner Shakti Films, under which he made several of his best-known works.

Samanta directed a wide range of popular films across genres, including Howrah Bridge (1958), Insan Jaag Utha (1959), China Town (1962), Kashmir Ki Kali (1964), An Evening in Paris (1967), Aradhana (1969), Kati Patang (1971), Amar Prem (1972), Amanush (1975), Anand Ashram (1977), Anusandhan / Barsaat Ki Ek Raat (1981) and Anyay Abhichar (1985).

He received Filmfare Awards for Best Film for Aradhana (1969), Anuraag (1973) and Amanush (1975). Amanush was also produced in Bengali, one of six Bengali-language films he made, which included an Indo-Bangladesh joint production in 1984.
