Background

Sembcorp Industries entered the Indian power sector through investments in thermal generation projects in Andhra Pradesh. The Indian business was originally developed in partnership with the Hyderabad-based Gayatri Group through a joint venture entity, Thermal Powertech Corporation India Limited (TPCIL), which constructed a coal-fired plant at Pynampuram in the Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh. A second project, originally promoted as NCC Power Projects Limited (later renamed Sembcorp Gayatri Power Limited), was developed adjacent to the first.

The two project companies were subsequently consolidated under a single Indian holding entity, which was rebranded as Sembcorp Energy India Limited, bringing the group's Indian generation assets under one corporate umbrella.

Operations

SEIL's generation portfolio is concentrated in coastal Andhra Pradesh, where its supercritical coal-fired units benefit from access to imported and domestic coal supply chains via nearby ports. Electricity from the plants is sold under long-term power purchase agreements signed with various state distribution utilities, with the balance dispatched through short-term contracts and the power exchanges.

Alongside its conventional thermal portfolio, the wider Sembcorp group has expanded its renewable energy presence in India through separate platforms covering wind and solar generation.

Timeline

  • Sembcorp enters the Indian power market through a joint venture with the Gayatri Group.
  • Thermal Powertech Corporation India Limited (TPCIL) commissions its first coal-fired units in Nellore district, Andhra Pradesh.
  • Acquisition and renaming of NCC Power Projects as Sembcorp Gayatri Power Limited.
  • Consolidation of the Indian thermal assets and rebranding of the holding company as Sembcorp Energy India Limited.

Significance

SEIL is among the larger independent power producers (IPPs) operating in southern India and represents one of the most substantial Singaporean investments in the Indian power sector. Its plants contribute base-load capacity to multiple state grids and form a significant component of Sembcorp's overseas energy footprint.
