Savita Punia

Savita Punia is an Indian field hockey player who plays as a goalkeeper for the India women's national team. Known for her shot-stopping ability and consistency, she has been a long-serving member of the squad and has captained the side in major international tournaments. She is widely credited for her role in India's fourth-place finish at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Background

Savita Punia was born on 11 July 1990 in the Sirsa district of Haryana. She took up hockey at the suggestion of her grandfather, Mahinder Singh Punia, and trained at the Maharaja Agrasen Girls School in Jodhka village before moving to Hisar for further coaching. The cost of the goalkeeping kit, often cited as substantial in her early years, was borne by her family, and her father drove her several kilometres daily for training.

Career

Early years

Savita made her senior debut for the Indian women's national hockey team in 2008. She gradually established herself as the first-choice goalkeeper through performances in junior and senior tournaments organised by the International Hockey Federation (FIH) and the Asian Hockey Federation.

Asian and Commonwealth competitions

She was part of the Indian team that won the silver medal at the 2013 Women's Asia Cup in Kuala Lumpur and the bronze medal at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon. India won the gold medal at the 2017 Women's Asia Cup in Kakamigahara, Japan, with Savita playing a key role in the final against China. She was also a member of the squads at the 2014 and 2018 Commonwealth Games and the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, where India took silver.

Olympic Games

Savita was part of the Indian team at the 2016 Rio Olympics, the country's first appearance at the women's Olympic hockey event in 36 years. At the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, held in 2021, she was the vice-captain and played a central role in India's run to the semi-finals, including a widely noted performance in the quarter-final against Australia, where India won 1–0. India finished fourth, its best ever finish at the Olympics in women's hockey.

Captaincy

Following the retirement of Rani Rampal from active leadership, Savita was appointed captain of the Indian women's hockey team. She led India at events including the 2022 FIH Women's Hockey World Cup in Spain and the Netherlands, the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham (where India won bronze), the 2022 Asian Games (held in 2023) in Hangzhou, and the FIH Pro League seasons during her tenure.

Playing style

Savita is recognised for her reflex saves, command of the goalmouth during penalty corners, and ability to perform under pressure in shoot-outs. Indian and international media have referred to her as the "Great Wall of India" for her shot-stopping displays.
