Background

The university is named after Sant Gahira Guru, a social and spiritual reformer associated with tribal communities of the Surguja region. Its establishment reflected a long-standing demand for a dedicated university in northern Chhattisgarh, an area with a substantial tribal population and a number of degree colleges that had earlier been affiliated to universities based farther south in the state.

Before the creation of Sarguja University, colleges in the Surguja, Koriya, Jashpur, Surajpur and Balrampur districts were affiliated to other state universities in Chhattisgarh. The formation of a regional university was intended to bring administration of higher education closer to students and institutions in this geographically distinct, largely forested and tribal-majority region.

Academic role

As a state public university, Sarguja University performs the standard functions of an Indian affiliating university:

  • Affiliating government, aided and private degree colleges in its jurisdiction.
  • Conducting examinations and awarding undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.
  • Offering teaching and research programmes through its own departments.
  • Regulating curricula and academic standards within its territorial jurisdiction.

Programmes are typically offered across the faculties of arts, science, commerce, education, and social sciences, along with selected professional and vocational courses through affiliated colleges.

Campus and location

The university campus is situated in Ambikapur, the administrative headquarters of Surguja district. Ambikapur lies in the northern part of Chhattisgarh, in a plateau and forested zone bordering Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand, which influences the demographic and cultural profile of the student body.

Significance

Sarguja University is significant as the main institution of higher learning in northern Chhattisgarh. By providing local access to university-level administration, examinations and postgraduate study, it plays an important role in expanding educational opportunities for students from tribal and rural backgrounds in the Surguja region. Naming the university after Sant Gahira Guru also reflects an effort to associate the institution with the cultural and reform traditions of the area.
