Background and early life
Sarfaraz Khan was born in Mumbai to Naushad Khan, a former club cricketer turned coach who has trained several players in the city's maidan circuit. He was introduced to cricket at a young age by his father, who personally supervised his training. His younger brother, Musheer Khan, is also a first-class cricketer for Mumbai and represented India at the Under-19 level.
Sarfaraz first attracted public attention in 2009 when, as an eleven-year-old, he scored 439 in a Harris Shield inter-school match in Mumbai, a record at that level of school cricket in India.
Youth and age-group cricket
He was a member of the India Under-19 squad that participated in the 2014 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup in the United Arab Emirates and the 2016 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup in Bangladesh, where India finished as runners-up. He was among the leading run-scorers in the 2016 tournament.
Domestic career
Sarfaraz made his first-class debut for Mumbai in 2014–15. After an early move to Uttar Pradesh in the domestic circuit, he returned to Mumbai and established himself as one of the most prolific run-scorers in the Ranji Trophy.
- In the 2019–20 Ranji Trophy season, he scored over 900 runs, with multiple double centuries.
- In the 2021–22 Ranji Trophy, he again crossed 900 runs in the season, with a batting average above 120.
- In the 2022–23 Ranji Trophy, he continued his consistency with another season aggregate above 500 runs at a high average.
- He has been part of Mumbai's Ranji Trophy final appearances during this period.
His sustained Ranji Trophy averages, among the highest in the history of the competition for batsmen with a comparable number of innings, were widely cited as a reason for his eventual selection to the senior India side.
Indian Premier League
Sarfaraz was signed by Royal Challengers Bangalore as a teenager in the 2015 IPL season, becoming one of the youngest players to feature in the league. He later played for the Uttar Pradesh-based franchise (then Kings XI Punjab) and Delhi Capitals across subsequent seasons.
International career
After several years of being overlooked despite heavy domestic run-scoring, Sarfaraz was named in India's Test squad for the home series against England in early 2024. He made his Test debut in the third Test at Rajkot on 15 February 2024, scoring half-centuries in both innings on debut. He continued in the squad for subsequent home Tests and was selected for the away tour of Australia in 2024–25.
Style of play
Sarfaraz is a compact middle-order batsman who is particularly strong against spin, using the sweep and reverse sweep effectively. He is also known for converting starts into very large scores in first-class cricket and for his fitness work, having visibly altered his physique ahead of his international call-up.
Significance
His Test selection was seen as recognition of consistent domestic performance over multiple seasons in an era when Indian Test selection has often favoured limited-overs form. His career is frequently cited in discussions on the weight given to Ranji Trophy runs in national selection.
