Background
The institute traces its origins to the Sardar Vallabhbhai Regional College of Engineering and Technology (SVRCET), which functioned as one of the Regional Engineering Colleges (RECs) jointly funded by the Government of India and the Government of Gujarat. As with the other RECs, it was conceived in the post-Independence period to meet the demand for trained engineering manpower and to expand technical education beyond the major metropolitan centres.
In 2002, as part of a nationwide policy initiative, the RECs were upgraded into National Institutes of Technology, bringing them directly under the central government and granting them deemed-to-be-university status. The college was accordingly renamed Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology. With the enactment of the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007, the institute received the formal status of an Institute of National Importance.
Academics
SVNIT offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes principally in engineering, applied sciences and management-related disciplines. Bachelor of Technology programmes are offered in core branches such as civil, mechanical, electrical, electronics, computer, and chemical engineering, alongside specialised postgraduate Master of Technology programmes and PhD research streams. Admissions to undergraduate engineering programmes are conducted through the centralised Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main) and the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counselling, while postgraduate admissions are largely based on GATE scores.
Campus
The campus is situated at Ichchhanath in Surat, on the banks of the Tapi river, and includes academic departments, central facilities, hostels, staff residences, sports grounds and a library. The institute hosts annual technical and cultural festivals organised by the student body.
