Saranya Ponvannan (born Sheela Christina) is an Indian actress who works predominantly in Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam cinema, with a few appearances in Kannada-language films. Saranya entered Tamil cinema with a lead role in Mani Ratnam's critically acclaimed crime drama Nayakan (1987). Through the late 1980s and the first half of the 1990s, she continued to feature in leading roles across Tamil and other South Indian language films.
Sabbatical and return
After 1996, Saranya took an eight-year break from films. She returned to acting in 2003, this time taking up character roles—most often portraying mothers and elder family members—in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and occasional Kannada productions.
