Overview
Sarangarh-Bilaigarh is a district in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh. It was carved out as a separate administrative unit to bring governance closer to the people of the region around Sarangarh and Bilaigarh, which earlier formed parts of Raigarh and Baloda Bazar districts respectively. Background
Sarangarh was historically the seat of the princely state of Sarangarh, one of the Chhattisgarh states under British paramountcy, which acceded to the Indian Union after independence. Following the reorganisation of states, the area became part of Madhya Pradesh and, after the creation of Chhattisgarh in 2000, was administered as part of Raigarh district. Bilaigarh, lying to the west, was a tehsil of Baloda Bazar district after the latter's creation in 2012.
The demand for a separate district drew on the geographical distance of these tehsils from their respective district headquarters, as well as the distinct cultural and historical identity of the Sarangarh region.
Formation
The Government of Chhattisgarh announced the creation of Sarangarh-Bilaigarh as a new district by combining the Sarangarh tehsil from Raigarh district with the Bilaigarh and adjoining tehsils from Baloda Bazar district. It is one of several new districts notified in Chhattisgarh in the early 2020s as part of an exercise to improve administrative reach.
Geography
The district is situated in the plains of eastern Chhattisgarh, in the Mahanadi basin. It shares boundaries with Raigarh, Janjgir-Champa, Baloda Bazar and parts of Odisha to the east. The terrain is largely agricultural, with paddy as the dominant crop, interspersed with forested patches.
Administration
The district headquarters is at Sarangarh. Administration is headed by a District Collector and a Superintendent of Police, with sub-divisional and tehsil-level offices at Sarangarh and Bilaigarh. The Sarangarh assembly constituency, reserved for Scheduled Castes, falls within the district and is part of the Raigarh Lok Sabha constituency.
Demographics and economy
The population is predominantly rural, with significant Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities. Chhattisgarhi is widely spoken alongside Hindi. The economy is based primarily on agriculture, with rice cultivation, pulses and oilseeds, supplemented by small-scale trade, forest produce, and limited industrial activity related to mineral processing in the wider region.
Significance
The creation of Sarangarh-Bilaigarh district is intended to ease access to revenue, police, and welfare services for residents of the Sarangarh and Bilaigarh areas. Sarangarh town also retains historical significance as a former princely capital, with associated heritage sites.
