Santosh Ganguli

Santosh Ganguli (1911–1985) was an Indian cricket umpire. He is recorded among Indian cricket officials of the twentieth century who stood in domestic matches during the developmental decades of the sport in India.

Background

Ganguli was active during a period when Indian domestic cricket was organised primarily around the Ranji Trophy, established in 1934, and other regional tournaments. Umpires of his generation officiated under the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), which had been founded in 1928 and gained Test status for India in 1932.

Significance

Domestic umpires such as Ganguli formed part of the officiating pool that supported the growth of first-class cricket in India through the mid-twentieth century. Their work underpinned the structure of the Ranji Trophy, the Duleep Trophy and other competitions organised by the BCCI.
