Career
Debut and early work
He made his film composing debut with Pa. Ranjith's Attakathi (2012), a coming-of-age film set in north Chennai. The soundtrack, which drew on the Tamil gaana tradition and folk idioms, brought him immediate critical attention. He followed this with Pizza (2012), directed by Karthik Subbaraj, where his minimalist horror score was widely praised.
Establishment
Through the mid-2010s, Santhosh Narayanan composed for a series of acclaimed films including Soodhu Kavvum (2013), Madras (2014), Jigarthanda (2014), Cuckoo (2014) and Kabali (2016), the last being his first Rajinikanth film. He continued his association with Ranjith on Kaala (2018), Sarpatta Parambarai (2021) and Natchathiram Nagargiradhu (2022).
Cross-industry projects
He has scored Hindi, Telugu and multilingual projects, including the Hindi adaptation Mukkabaaz (2018) directed by Anurag Kashyap, and contributed to the Tamil-Telugu film Jigarthanda DoubleX (2023). His work also extends to web series and streaming originals.
Independent music
Outside of films, he has been associated with The Casteless Collective, an anti-caste music ensemble formed in 2017 in collaboration with Pa. Ranjith's Neelam Cultural Centre, fusing gaana, rap and rock with Ambedkarite and Dalit political themes.

Prakash Kumar and Sean Roldan. His work is marked by a willingness to foreground subaltern musical traditions, particularly Chennai gaana and Tamil folk, within mainstream cinema. Songs such as "Aaluma Doluma" (Vedalam, 2015), "Neruppu Da" (Kabali) and the soundtracks of Madras and Sarpatta Parambarai have been cited for embedding caste, labour and urban identity into popular film music.
