Vijay Kumar Basavarajaiah (17 July 1983 – 15 June 2021), known by his stage name Sanchari Vijay, was an Indian actor known for his work in Kannada cinema. He began his career as a stage actor, training with Sanchari Theatre, a culture centre with its own drama troupe based in Bangalore. The association with this group later inspired the stage name by which he became widely recognised.
Vijay transitioned from theatre to films and became known for taking on character-driven roles. His portrayal of a transgender person in the Kannada film Naanu Avanalla...Avalu (2014) brought him wide recognition. For this performance, he was awarded the National Film Award for Best Actor at the 62nd National Film Awards. He also received the Karnataka State Film Award for Best Actor and the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor – Kannada for the same role.
He went on to receive praise for his performances in Killing Veerappan (2016) and Nathicharami (2018), which further established his reputation as a versatile performer in Kannada cinema. Over a career spanning about ten years, he appeared in 25 films, working across a range of genres and roles.
Sanchari Vijay died on 15 June 2021, following a motorcycle crash. He is remembered for his contribution to Kannada theatre and film, particularly for the recognition his work brought to character-led performances within the industry.
