Background

The area that now forms Sakti district has historical associations with the former princely state of Sakti, one of the small Chhattisgarh states under the Eastern States Agency during the British period. After the integration of princely states into independent India, the territory became part of Bilaspur district in Madhya Pradesh, and was later included in Janjgir–Champa district when that district was formed. With the creation of Chhattisgarh as a separate state in 2000, the region became part of the new state.

Formation

The Government of Chhattisgarh announced the creation of several new districts to bring administration closer to citizens, and Sakti was among the new districts notified in this round of reorganisation. The new district was constituted by separating tehsils and blocks of the Sakti area from Janjgir–Champa district. The headquarters was established at Sakti town, which had earlier functioned as a sub-divisional and tehsil centre.

Geography

The district lies in the eastern part of Chhattisgarh, within the Chhattisgarh plains. It is generally bordered by parts of Janjgir–Champa, Korba and Raigarh districts. The terrain is largely flat agricultural land interspersed with low hills and forested patches. The Mahanadi river system, including local tributaries, drains parts of the district.

Administration

The district is headed by a District Collector and Magistrate, with a Superintendent of Police responsible for law and order. For administrative purposes, the district is divided into tehsils and development blocks centred on towns such as Sakti, Malkharoda, Dabhra and Jaijaipur, which were earlier units within Janjgir–Champa district.

Economy

The economy of the district is predominantly agrarian, with paddy being the principal crop, alongside pulses and oilseeds. The presence of railway connectivity on the Howrah–Mumbai main line through Sakti town supports trade and movement of goods. The wider region around Sakti is part of an industrial belt in eastern Chhattisgarh associated with coal, power generation and allied industries.

Transport

Sakti is served by the Sakti railway station on the Howrah–Nagpur–Mumbai trunk route of the Indian Railways, which provides long-distance connectivity. National and state highways connecting Bilaspur, Korba, Raigarh and Janjgir pass through or near the district, linking it to the rest of Chhattisgarh.

Culture

Chhattisgarhi is widely spoken alongside Hindi. Local culture reflects the broader traditions of the Chhattisgarh plains, including festivals such as Hareli, Pola, Teeja and Navratri, and folk forms associated with the region. The former princely town of Sakti retains old temples and structures linked to its erstwhile rulers.
