Overview
SVKM's Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies, commonly known as NMIMS, is a deemed-to-be university based in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. It was established in 1981 as a business school under the aegis of the Shri Vile Parle Kelavani Mandal (SVKM), a public charitable trust active in education since 1934. NMIMS was initially set up to offer postgraduate management education and has since expanded into a multidisciplinary institution offering programmes across management, engineering, pharmacy, law, commerce, science, architecture and other fields.

Background
SVKM was founded in 1934 in the Vile Parle area of Mumbai with the aim of providing education to students in the locality. NMIMS was established by the trust in 1981 to provide a programme in management studies in the western region of India. The institute initially functioned as an affiliated institute of the University of Mumbai before being granted deemed-to-be university status by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, in 2003 under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956.
