Background

SJVN was incorporated as a joint venture between the Union Government and the State Government of Himachal Pradesh, with the Centre holding the majority stake. It was originally established to implement the Nathpa Jhakri Hydroelectric Project on the Satluj river in Himachal Pradesh, one of the largest underground hydropower stations in India. Over time, the company diversified its mandate beyond hydropower to include thermal generation, transmission, and renewable energy.

Operations

The company's flagship asset is the Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station, located in Kinnaur and Shimla districts of Himachal Pradesh, which uses water from the Satluj river. Its other major operating asset in Himachal Pradesh is the Rampur Hydro Power Station, situated downstream of Nathpa Jhakri and designed to use the tail-race discharge of the upstream plant.

SJVN has expanded into projects in other Indian states and in neighbouring countries, including Nepal and Bhutan, where it has undertaken hydropower development on a bilateral basis. The company has also entered the solar and wind power segments, taking up utility-scale renewable energy projects, and has interests in power transmission through subsidiaries.

Corporate structure

SJVN functions through several subsidiaries and joint ventures dedicated to specific business lines, including thermal power generation, power transmission, and renewable energy. The company is listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange of India following its initial public offering, with the Government of India remaining the principal promoter.

Significance

As one of the central public sector enterprises in the Indian power sector, SJVN plays a notable role in harnessing the hydropower potential of the western Himalayan river systems, particularly the Satluj basin. Its projects contribute to the northern grid and to inter-governmental cooperation on hydropower, especially with Nepal and Bhutan. The Nathpa Jhakri station in particular is regarded as a landmark in Indian hydroelectric engineering due to its underground powerhouse and high installed capacity.
