Background
Campbell was born in Perth, Western Australia. He emerged in domestic cricket during the mid-1990s and spent his entire Australian first-class career with Western Australia.
Domestic career
Campbell made his debut for Western Australia in the 1995–96 season. In his early years he played primarily as a specialist batsman, with Adam Gilchrist keeping wicket for the side. After Gilchrist's elevation to the Australian national team in the late 1990s, Campbell took over as Western Australia's first-choice wicket-keeper. His final appearances for the state came during the 2005–06 season, after which he was succeeded by Luke Ronchi.
International career with Australia
Campbell first represented Australia A during the 1997–98 season. He made his ODI debut in January 2002 against New Zealand, deputising for Gilchrist. His only other ODI appearance came in December 2002 against Sri Lanka, again as a stand-in for Gilchrist.
Post-retirement and Indian Cricket League
After concluding his domestic career in Australia, Campbell moved into broadcasting, working as a sports presenter on radio and as a cricket commentator on television. In 2008, he played a single season with the Ahmedabad Rockets in the unsanctioned Indian Cricket League (ICL).
Move to Hong Kong
In 2012, Campbell relocated to Hong Kong to play for and coach the Kowloon Cricket Club. In 2016, at the age of 43, he was named in the Hong Kong national team's squad for the 2016 ICC World Twenty20 held in India. He made his T20I debut against Zimbabwe on 8 March 2016, opening the batting and scoring 9 runs. Aged 44 years and 30 days at the time, he became the oldest player to debut in a T20I match.
Coaching
Campbell is the head coach of Durham, on a contract covering the 2023 to 2025 seasons.
Significance
Campbell's career is notable for its unusual trajectory: a long-serving domestic wicket-keeper batsman who served as understudy to one of the era's leading gloveman, a brief stint at the highest level of Australian cricket, and a late international comeback for an Associate nation that produced a recognised T20I age record.
