Background
The project was conceived as part of a wave of Indian adaptations of internationally successful British and American crime dramas, commissioned for OTT platforms in the early 2020s. Applause Entertainment, the content arm of the Aditya Birla Group led by Sameer Nair, partnered with BBC Studios India to remake Luther, a series originally broadcast by BBC One starring Idris Elba. The Indian version transposes the action from London to Mumbai, retaining the central premise of a morally conflicted detective whose intuitive grasp of criminal psychology brings him close to the people he hunts.
Ajay Devgn, who had earlier portrayed police officers in the Singham films and Gangaajal, was cast as Rudraveer "Rudra" Singh, the protagonist DCP attached to the Mumbai Crime Branch. The series was directed by Rajesh Mapuskar, known for Ferrari Ki Sawaari and the Marathi film Ventilator.

Plot
The narrative follows Rudraveer Singh, a senior officer in the Mumbai Crime Branch whose unconventional methods, volatile temperament and uncompromising pursuit of suspects have made him both effective and controversial. Across six episodes, he investigates self-contained cases that include the murder of a couple by their daughter, a serial offender targeting young women, and a series of terror-linked crimes, while a longer arc explores his relationship with Aaliyah Choksi, an enigmatic figure with a connection to one of his early cases. A parallel thread follows the breakdown of his marriage to Shaila.
Production
Filming was carried out largely on location in Mumbai, with the city's coastline, suburban neighbourhoods and police precincts forming the visual backdrop. The series was Devgn's first lead role in a long-form streaming series, having earlier appeared in feature films and shorts on OTT platforms. Hotstar Specials promoted it as one of its flagship Hindi originals for the year.
Release and reception
The series premiered on Disney+ Hotstar on 4 March 2022, with all six episodes released together. Reviews in the Indian press were mixed: critics generally praised Ajay Devgn's restrained central performance and the production values, while some pointed to the closeness of the adaptation to the original Luther as both a strength and a limitation. Raashii Khanna's portrayal of Aaliyah was widely highlighted in commentary on the show.
