Background

The Royal Enfield name originated in Redditch, Worcestershire, England, where the Enfield Cycle Company began producing motorcycles in 1901. The marque was associated with the slogan "Made like a gun, goes like a bullet", a reference to the company's earlier work supplying components to the Royal Small Arms Factory at Enfield.

In 1955, Madras Motors entered into a partnership with the British parent to assemble Royal Enfield Bullet motorcycles in India for the Indian Army and police forces. The Indian arm, Enfield India, was set up in Tiruvottiyur near Chennai. While the British parent ceased motorcycle production in 1970, the Indian operation continued, eventually becoming the sole producer of the Royal Enfield brand worldwide.

The company also runs a technology centre in Chennai and a UK Technology Centre in Bruntingthorpe, Leicestershire, which supports product development for global markets. Production volumes have grown substantially since the late 2000s, making Royal Enfield the dominant player in India's mid-size motorcycle segment (250cc and above).

Products

The current product range is built around several engine platforms:

  • J-platform (350cc): Classic 350, Meteor 350, Hunter 350, Bullet 350.
  • P-platform (450cc): Himalayan 450 (Sherpa engine).

Significance

Royal Enfield occupies a distinctive position in the Indian automotive industry as a heritage brand that successfully transitioned from a niche, military-associated manufacturer into a globally exported lifestyle motorcycle marque. Its turnaround under Eicher Motors, particularly from the mid-2000s onwards, is often cited as a case study in product repositioning. The company has also fostered a strong rider community, organising long-running events such as Rider Mania and the Himalayan Odyssey ride to Ladakh.
