Overview

Deshabandu Romesh Shantha Kaluwitharana (born 24 November 1969) is a former Sri Lankan cricketer who represented the Sri Lanka national cricket team between 1990 and 2004. A wicketkeeper-batter known for his aggressive style at the top of the order, he was part of the side that won the 1996 Cricket World Cup.

Kaluwitharana and his opening partner Sanath Jayasuriya are widely credited with reshaping the approach to one-day international cricket in the mid-1990s, employing an explosive batting strategy in the early overs that influenced how the format was played. This partnership became one of the defining features of Sri Lanka's cricket during that era.

He made his Twenty20 debut on 17 August 2004, turning out for Colts Cricket Club in the 2004 SLC Twenty20 Tournament. After his playing career, he moved into coaching, and on 17 May 2008 he was appointed as the interim cricket coach of Malaysia.

Kaluwitharana received his education at St. Sebastian's College, Moratuwa.
