Overview
The Rohit Shetty Cop Universe is an Indian shared cinematic universe of Hindi-language action films created by filmmaker Rohit Shetty. The franchise centres on three fictional Indian police officers — Bajirao Singham, Sangram "Simmba" Bhalerao, and Veer Sooryavanshi — and their crossover narratives involving terrorism, organised crime, and corruption. Produced under Rohit Shetty Picturez and distributed primarily by Reliance Entertainment, with later instalments co-produced by Dharma Productions and Jio Studios, the universe is among the most commercially successful franchises in Hindi cinema.

Background
Rohit Shetty, known for high-octane action and stunt-driven cinema, launched the franchise with Singham in 2011, an official Hindi remake of the 2010 Tamil film of the same name directed by Hari and starring Suriya. The Hindi version, headlined by Ajay Devgn as DCP Bajirao Singham, established the template of an upright, physically imposing officer who confronts political and criminal nexuses. The commercial success of Singham led Shetty to expand the property into a sequel and subsequently into a wider universe of interlinked films featuring different protagonists.
Films
Singham (2011)
Directed by Rohit Shetty, the film stars Ajay Devgn as Bajirao Singham, an honest officer from the fictional village of Shivgadh in Goa, who clashes with politician-gangster Jaykant Shikre (Prakash Raj). Kajal Aggarwal played the female lead. The film was a major box-office success and is considered the foundational entry of the universe.
Singham Returns (2014)
The sequel, again directed by Shetty, shifted Singham's posting to Mumbai, where he tackles a politically backed godman and black-money networks. Kareena Kapoor Khan played the female lead. The film expanded the character's scope from regional to national-level corruption.
Simmba (2018)
The first crossover entry, Simmba introduced Ranveer Singh as Sangram "Simmba" Bhalerao, an orphaned, opportunistic officer from Shivgadh who is reformed after a personal tragedy and a sexual-assault investigation. Sara Ali Khan played the female lead. Ajay Devgn appeared in an extended cameo as Singham, formally connecting the two films and establishing the shared universe. Simmba was loosely inspired by the Telugu film Temper (2015).
Sooryavanshi (2021)
Released after pandemic-related delays, Sooryavanshi stars Akshay Kumar as DCP Veer Sooryavanshi, head of a fictional Anti-Terrorism Squad, with Katrina Kaif as the female lead. The plot centres on sleeper-cell terrorism linked to the 1993 Bombay bombings. Both Ajay Devgn (Singham) and Ranveer Singh (Simmba) appear in the climax, marking the first three-character crossover of the franchise. The film opened theatres in many parts of India after the COVID-19 lockdowns and recorded strong box-office returns.
Singham Again (2024)
Released during the Diwali 2024 window, Singham Again is the third Singham film and the largest crossover entry to date. It features Ajay Devgn, Akshay Kumar and Ranveer Singh reprising their roles, with Kareena Kapoor Khan, Deepika Padukone (as a new female officer), Tiger Shroff and Arjun Kapoor joining the ensemble. The narrative draws thematic parallels with the Ramayana.
Television
Indian Police Force (2024)
Rohit Shetty's first web series, Indian Police Force, premiered on Amazon Prime Video in January 2024. Starring Sidharth Malhotra, Shilpa Shetty and Vivek Oberoi, the series is set in the same tonal and thematic space as the film franchise and is generally regarded as part of the wider Cop Universe, though direct narrative crossovers with the films have been limited.
Recurring Themes and Style
- Upright Indian Police Service or state-cadre officers as protagonists.
- Antagonists drawn from politician–criminal nexuses, communal terror networks, and organised crime.
- Set-piece action sequences featuring vehicular stunts, a signature Rohit Shetty element.
- Use of slow-motion entries, mass dialogue and uniform-centric iconography.
- Heavy reliance on item numbers and remixed retro songs.
- Goa, Mumbai and the fictional village of Shivgadh as recurring settings.
Production and Distribution
Singham was co-produced by Reliance Entertainment and Ajay Devgn's Cape of Good Films. From Singham Returns onward, Rohit Shetty Picturez took the lead production credit. Simmba and Sooryavanshi were co-produced with Dharma Productions, founded by Karan Johar. Singham Again was backed by Jio Studios, Rohit Shetty Picturez, Devgn Films and Dharma Productions.
Significance
The Cop Universe is regarded as the first sustained shared cinematic universe in mainstream Hindi cinema, predating other Indian attempts at interconnected franchises such as the YRF Spy Universe in scale of crossover storytelling. It has played a notable role in re-popularising the Hindi police-action genre after a decline in the 2000s, and has influenced casting, marketing and distribution patterns for Hindi tentpole releases, particularly around festive windows like Diwali and Independence Day.
