Overview
Robin Uthappa is a former Indian international cricketer who played as a right-handed top-order batsman and occasional wicketkeeper. Known for his attacking strokeplay, he represented India in One Day Internationals and Twenty20 Internationals between 2006 and 2015, and had a long career across domestic cricket and the Indian Premier League. Background
Uthappa was born into a Kodava family in Karnataka. His father, Venu Uthappa, served as a hockey umpire. He attended Sri Bhagawan Mahaveer Jain College in Bengaluru and developed his cricket through age-group structures in Karnataka, a state with a strong cricketing tradition.
Domestic career
Uthappa made his first-class debut for Karnataka in the Ranji Trophy. He was a key batter in Karnataka's title-winning sides during the 2013–14 and 2014–15 Ranji Trophy seasons, when the team also won the Irani Cup and the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He later moved to Saurashtra, with whom he was associated during their 2019–20 Ranji Trophy triumph, and subsequently played for Kerala.
International career
Uthappa made his ODI debut against England in April 2006 in Indore, scoring 86 in his first innings. He featured in India's transition phase in limited-overs cricket and was part of the squad that won the 2007 ICC World Twenty20 in South Africa under the captaincy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, where he was noted for hitting the decisive runs in the bowl-out tie-breaker against Pakistan in the group stage. He played 46 ODIs and 13 T20Is for India, with his last international appearance coming in 2015.
Indian Premier League
Uthappa played in the IPL from its inception in 2008. He represented Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Pune Warriors India in the early seasons before joining Kolkata Knight Riders in 2014. He was the leading run-scorer of the 2014 IPL season and won the Orange Cap, playing a central role in Kolkata's title-winning campaign that year. He later played for Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings, winning a second IPL title with Chennai in 2021.
