Background

The Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh historically comprised the districts of Kurnool, Anantapur, Kadapa, and Chittoor. Until the establishment of Rayalaseema University, higher education in the Kurnool area was largely served by colleges affiliated to Sri Krishnadevaraya University in Anantapur. The creation of a separate university in Kurnool was part of the state government's policy of decentralising higher education and providing localised academic administration for the region.
