Background

Ramoji Film City was conceived by Cherukuri Ramoji Rao, the founder of the Ramoji Group, whose other ventures include the Telugu daily Eenadu, the ETV network, and Margadarsi Chit Fund. The complex was designed as a one-stop facility where filmmakers could shoot, process, and complete a production within a single campus, reducing the logistical burden of using multiple locations.

The project was master-planned by art director Nitish Roy, who designed many of the themed sets and gardens. The studio sits on a sprawling site on the outskirts of Hyderabad, on the Hyderabad–Vijayawada highway in the Ranga Reddy district.

Facilities

The campus contains a wide range of facilities aimed at supporting film, television, and advertising productions:

  • Multiple sound stages and indoor shooting floors.
  • Permanent outdoor sets recreating settings such as airports, railway stations, temples, mosques, churches, hospitals, prisons, and rural villages.
  • Themed gardens and landscaped backdrops.
  • In-house departments for costumes, props, art direction, dubbing, editing, visual effects, and post-production.
  • Accommodation in the form of hotels and guest houses on the premises.

Tourism

Apart from its function as a production hub, Ramoji Film City is a major tourist attraction in Telangana. Visitors can take guided tours of selected sets, watch live performances and stunt shows, and experience themed rides and entertainment zones. It is widely promoted as a leisure destination by the state tourism authorities and is included in standard Hyderabad sightseeing itineraries.

Productions

The studio has hosted productions across multiple Indian film industries, including Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, and Bengali cinema, as well as international shoots, television serials, and advertising films. It has been used by leading filmmakers for both period epics and contemporary urban dramas, given the variety of ready-made backdrops available on site.

Significance

Ramoji Film City is widely cited as one of the largest integrated film studio complexes in the world and has been recognised by the Guinness World Records for its scale. Within India, it is considered a landmark of the Telugu film industry and a key piece of infrastructure for South Indian cinema, complementing the studios historically based in Chennai and Mumbai. The complex has also contributed to Hyderabad's broader identity as a centre for media, entertainment, and information technology.
