Overview

The Raman Research Institute (RRI) is a scientific research institute located in Bengaluru, India. It was founded by the Nobel laureate Sir C. V. Raman in 1948, initially as a privately owned institute dedicated to fundamental research in the sciences.

Following its early years under Raman's personal stewardship, the institute was reconstituted as an autonomous body in 1972. From that point onwards, it has received funding from the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, while continuing to function as an independent research organisation.

RRI is engaged in scientific research and is associated with work in areas of basic sciences. Its founding by C. V. Raman links it historically to one of India's prominent traditions of fundamental scientific enquiry.
