Background
The Ramaiah group of educational institutions was founded by M. S. Ramaiah, an industrialist and philanthropist, beginning with M. S. Ramaiah Institute of Technology in the 1960s. Over the following decades, the group expanded into medicine, dental sciences, nursing, management, law and the arts, with most institutions located in the MathikereāMSR Nagar area of north-western Bengaluru. RUAS was created to consolidate several of these specialised schools under a single university framework with an applied, industry-oriented academic model.
Establishment
RUAS was constituted as a private university by an Act of the Karnataka State Legislature, giving it the authority to award its own degrees. The university adopted a faculty-and-school structure inspired by the applied sciences universities of continental Europe, emphasising project-based learning, industry engagement and integration of research with professional practice.
Academic structure
The university is organised into multiple faculties and schools, which typically include:
- Faculty of Engineering and Technology
- Faculty of Art and Design
- Faculty of Management and Commerce
- Faculty of Mathematical and Physical Sciences
- Faculty of Pharmacy
- Faculty of Dental Sciences
- Faculty of Hospitality Management and Catering Technology
- Faculty of Life and Allied Health Sciences
Programmes are offered at the diploma, bachelor's, master's and doctoral levels, and the university supports research centres in areas such as automotive engineering, aerospace, computational sciences, materials, and health sciences.
Campus
The main campus is situated at Gnanagangothri, Peenya, in Bengaluru, with additional facilities and affiliated institutions in the MSR Nagar area near Mathikere. The campuses house teaching blocks, laboratories, design studios, workshops, libraries and student residences.
Significance
RUAS is one of the prominent private universities in Karnataka offering an applied-sciences orientation across a broad range of disciplines. By bringing professional schools in engineering, design, health sciences, pharmacy and management within a unified university structure, it represents a model that places emphasis on vocational depth alongside academic study, contributing to the higher-education ecosystem of Bengaluru.
