Overview
Rajpur Sonarpur is a city and municipality in the South 24 Parganas district of the Indian state of West Bengal. Located on the southern fringe of the Kolkata metropolitan region, it functions as a major suburban extension of the city of Kolkata and serves as a residential and commercial hub for commuters working in the metropolitan core. The municipality was constituted in 1996 through the merger of the erstwhile Rajpur and Sonarpur municipalities.

Geography
Rajpur Sonarpur lies to the south-east of Kolkata, bordering the city's southern suburbs. The terrain is flat alluvial land typical of the lower Gangetic delta. The area is drained by minor channels of the Adi Ganga system and is interspersed with wetlands, residential colonies and agricultural plots that have progressively been converted into urban neighbourhoods.
Civic administration
The Rajpur Sonarpur Municipality administers civic services across a number of wards covering localities such as Sonarpur, Rajpur, Narendrapur, Garia (southern parts), Kamalgazi, Subhashgram and Baruipur Road. The municipality is responsible for water supply, sanitation, road maintenance, property tax collection, and the management of markets and public health within its jurisdiction. It falls within the broader planning framework of the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA).
Transport
The city is well connected to central Kolkata by both road and rail.
- Rail: Sonarpur Junction is a major station on the Sealdah South suburban line of the Eastern Railway, with services branching towards Canning, Diamond Harbour, Namkhana and Lakshmikantapur. Other stations within the municipal area include Narendrapur and Subhashgram.
- Road: Garia–Baruipur Road and the Kolkata–Sonarpur arterial routes link the area to the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass and central Kolkata.
- Metro: The Kavi Subhash (New Garia) terminus of the Kolkata Metro lies close to the northern edge of the municipality, providing rapid transit access to central and northern Kolkata.
Education and institutions
Rajpur Sonarpur hosts a number of educational and research institutions. Notable among these is the Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya and Ramakrishna Mission Residential College at Narendrapur, an autonomous institution affiliated with the University of Calcutta and run by the Ramakrishna Mission. The area also contains numerous schools, colleges and technical institutes that draw students from across the southern suburbs.
History
Rajpur and Sonarpur were historically two separate semi-rural settlements south of colonial Calcutta, with Rajpur known as a centre of Bengali cultural life in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. With the post-independence expansion of Kolkata and the development of suburban rail services on the Sealdah South section, both localities experienced rapid in-migration and urban growth. The two municipalities were merged in 1996 to form the present unified Rajpur Sonarpur Municipality, reflecting their effectively continuous urban character.
Demographics
Bengali is the principal language spoken in the municipality. The population is predominantly Hindu, with significant Muslim and smaller Christian communities. The city has seen substantial demographic growth driven by the suburbanisation of Kolkata, with new housing complexes and middle-class residential colonies developing alongside older village cores.
Significance
As one of the larger municipalities within the Kolkata Metropolitan Area, Rajpur Sonarpur plays an important role in absorbing the housing demand spilling over from Kolkata proper. Its proximity to the metro terminus at Kavi Subhash and to the Sealdah South rail corridor has made it a focal point for real estate development in southern Kolkata, while institutions such as the Ramakrishna Mission complex at Narendrapur lend it educational and cultural importance.
