Background

Ambikapur serves as the principal urban centre of the Surguja division and acts as a referral hub for surrounding districts including Balrampur, Surajpur, Jashpur and Koriya. Before the establishment of a dedicated medical college, complex tertiary care needs in the region were largely met by referrals to Raipur, Bilaspur or institutions in neighbouring states. The medical college was set up alongside an attached teaching hospital, which functions as a major government referral hospital for northern Chhattisgarh.

Academics

The college offers the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme. Admission to the undergraduate course is conducted through the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG), with seats allocated under the all-India quota and the Chhattisgarh state quota in accordance with rules framed by the Directorate of Medical Education, Chhattisgarh. The institution functions under norms prescribed by the National Medical Commission, which succeeded the erstwhile Medical Council of India.

Departments

As with other government medical colleges in Chhattisgarh, the institution houses pre-clinical, para-clinical and clinical departments such as:

  • Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry
  • Pathology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Forensic Medicine and Community Medicine
  • General Medicine, General Surgery, Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology
  • Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology (ENT), Dermatology and Psychiatry
  • Anaesthesiology, Radiodiagnosis and Emergency Medicine

Teaching hospital

The attached hospital provides outpatient and inpatient services and acts as the principal tertiary care facility for the Surguja division. It supports clinical training for MBBS students and offers services across general medicine, surgery, maternal and child health, trauma and emergency care, alongside diagnostic facilities such as radiology and laboratory medicine.

Significance

The college is one of several government medical colleges established in Chhattisgarh after the state's formation in 2000, as part of efforts to decentralise medical education beyond the state capital. By placing a teaching hospital in Ambikapur, the institution improves access to specialist care in a tribal-majority region and provides local opportunities for medical training, contributing to the wider human-resource needs of public health services in northern Chhattisgarh.
