Background
The Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies (RGUKT) system was set up by the Government of Andhra Pradesh to address the educational needs of rural students who often lack access to quality higher education in science, engineering and technology. The university operates under a special legislative framework that gives it autonomy in academic and administrative matters. Basara is one of the campuses of the RGUKT system, alongside other campuses originally established at Nuzvid, Idupulapaya (RK Valley) and Ongole.
The Basara campus is situated near the banks of the Godavari river, close to the Sri Gnana Saraswati Temple, a well-known centre of learning in the region. The choice of Basara reflected the university's intent to bring advanced technical education to a less urbanised area.
Academic Programmes
RGUKT Basara offers an integrated six-year programme that admits students after completion of secondary schooling (Class 10). The programme typically combines a two-year pre-university component (equivalent to higher secondary education in science streams) with a four-year undergraduate engineering degree. Admission is based on academic merit in the qualifying examination, with reservation policies aligned to those of the Government of Telangana.
Engineering disciplines offered at the campus generally include core branches such as Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Metallurgical and Materials Engineering.
Governance
The university follows a governance structure typical of Indian state universities, headed by a Chancellor and a Vice-Chancellor, supported by a board of governors and an academic senate. Following the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh in 2014, the Basara campus came under the jurisdiction of the Government of Telangana, while the campuses located within Andhra Pradesh continued under that state's administration.
Campus and Student Life
The Basara campus is fully residential, providing hostel accommodation, dining facilities, libraries, laboratories and recreational amenities to its students. The institution emphasises continuous evaluation, project-based learning and use of digital learning tools as part of its pedagogical model.
Significance
RGUKT Basara is significant as a model of state-supported, merit-based, residential technical education aimed at rural empowerment. By admitting students primarily on the basis of school-level performance and providing subsidised education, the university has expanded access to engineering education for students from socio-economically weaker backgrounds in northern Telangana and adjoining regions.
