Background
The university was constituted by the Government of Madhya Pradesh through a state legislative act to coordinate and regulate technical education in the state. Prior to its creation, engineering and technology colleges in Madhya Pradesh were affiliated to general universities such as Barkatullah University, Bhopal, and other regional universities. RGPV was established to consolidate technical education under a single specialised body, and is named after former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
Academic structure
RGPV operates both as an affiliating university for a large number of private and government colleges and as a teaching university through its own departments and university institutes located on the Bhopal campus. Programmes are offered at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels, with disciplines covering:
- Engineering and technology
- Pharmacy
- Architecture and planning
- Management studies
- Computer applications
- Applied sciences and humanities
The university conducts centralised semester examinations for affiliated colleges and issues degrees, statements of marks and other academic credentials. Admissions to undergraduate engineering programmes in affiliated institutions are generally made through state-level counselling based on entrance examinations conducted by central and state agencies.
Campus
The main campus of RGPV is situated in Bhopal and houses the administrative offices, examination wing, university teaching departments, central library, hostels and research centres. The university also operates the University Institute of Technology (UIT-RGPV), which offers degree programmes in engineering and related disciplines on the campus itself.
Affiliated institutions
RGPV affiliates a wide network of technical colleges spread across the districts of Madhya Pradesh, including institutions in Bhopal, Indore, Gwalior, Jabalpur, Ujjain, Sagar and other cities. Affiliated colleges include government engineering colleges, autonomous institutions, private engineering colleges, polytechnic-linked degree institutions, pharmacy colleges and management institutes.
Governance
The university is governed under the provisions of its enabling act passed by the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly. Statutory authorities include the Chancellor (the Governor of Madhya Pradesh in an ex-officio capacity), the Vice-Chancellor as the principal executive and academic officer, an Executive Council, an Academic Council, and Boards of Studies for individual disciplines. The university is funded by the Government of Madhya Pradesh and regulated, for technical education matters, by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the University Grants Commission (UGC).
Significance
As the principal technical university of Madhya Pradesh, RGPV plays a central role in shaping the curriculum, examination standards and research direction for technical education in the state. The pool of engineers, pharmacists and managers graduating from its affiliated colleges contributes significantly to the technical workforce in central India.
