Background
Balangir, the headquarters town of Balangir district, has historically been a regional hub for administration and education in western Odisha. Rajendra College, the parent institution, was named after Rajendra Narayan Singh Deo, a notable political figure associated with the erstwhile Patna State and later the state of Odisha. The college developed over decades into a major degree-awarding centre affiliated to Sambalpur University, before being elevated as a unitary university to expand higher education access in the region.
Academics
The university is organised into faculties covering the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, commerce and management. Postgraduate departments offer master's level programmes, and the institution also supports research leading to doctoral degrees in selected disciplines. As a state university, it follows the academic regulations and statutes framed under Odisha's higher education laws and the guidelines of the University Grants Commission (UGC).
Campus
The campus is situated within Balangir town and retains the older buildings and grounds of Rajendra College alongside newer academic blocks, hostels, library facilities and administrative offices.
Significance
The creation of Rajendra University was part of a broader policy initiative by the Government of Odisha to decentralise higher education and reduce dependence on a small number of older universities concentrated in coastal Odisha. By granting university status to a long-established regional college, the state aimed to strengthen postgraduate teaching, research output and institutional autonomy in the under-served western districts.
