The Kulik river flows through the city, and the surrounding region forms part of the alluvial plains drained by the Mahananda system. The city is connected by National Highway 12 (formerly NH 34), which links it with Malda to the south and Siliguri to the north. Bihar lies a short distance to the west, and Bangladesh borders the district to the east.
Administration
Raiganj is administered by the Raiganj Municipality. It is the seat of the district administration of Uttar Dinajpur, which was created in 1992 when the older West Dinajpur district was bifurcated into Uttar Dinajpur and Dakshin Dinajpur. The city is also the headquarters of the Raiganj subdivision and falls within the Raiganj Lok Sabha constituency and the Raiganj Vidhan Sabha constituency.
History
Historically, the area around Raiganj was part of the larger Dinajpur region of undivided Bengal. After the partition of Bengal in 1947, parts of Dinajpur were divided between East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) and India, with the Indian portion becoming West Dinajpur. Raiganj grew in importance as a trading and administrative town along the route connecting Malda with the northern districts. With the bifurcation of West Dinajpur in 1992, Raiganj became the headquarters of the newly formed Uttar Dinajpur district.
Kulik Bird Sanctuary
Located on the outskirts of the city, the Kulik Bird Sanctuary (also known as Raiganj Wildlife Sanctuary) is among the largest bird sanctuaries in Asia by population of migratory birds. It hosts large numbers of open-billed storks, night herons, egrets, and cormorants during the migratory season, which typically runs from June to the post-monsoon months. The sanctuary is a major ecological asset and tourist attraction of the region.
Education
Raiganj is an important educational centre in North Bengal. Raiganj University, established as a full-fledged university in 2015 (developed from the earlier Raiganj College, founded in 1948), offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and research programmes. Raiganj Government Medical College and Hospital provides medical education and tertiary healthcare services to the district and adjoining areas. The city also has numerous schools affiliated to the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education and the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education, along with CBSE-affiliated institutions.
Economy
The economy of Raiganj is largely based on agriculture, trade, and services. The surrounding rural areas produce paddy, jute, wheat, and seasonal vegetables, with the city acting as a market and distribution hub. Small-scale industries, retail, and government services contribute significantly to local employment. Banking, healthcare, and education form important components of the urban economy.
