Background

Private FM broadcasting in India became possible after the Government of India opened the sector to private players through licence auctions beginning in the late 1990s. Radio Mirchi was launched as part of this liberalisation, with ENIL acquiring frequencies across multiple Indian cities through successive phases of FM licensing.

The network's programming is built around contemporary film music, talk segments, on-air contests, and presenter-driven shows. Its on-air hosts are referred to as "RJs" (radio jockeys), and several Mirchi RJs have gained national recognition.

Operations

Radio Mirchi operates stations across a large number of Indian cities, broadcasting in languages including Hindi, English, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Bengali, Gujarati, and Punjabi, with content tailored to local markets. In addition to terrestrial FM, the network has expanded into digital streaming, podcasts, and on-ground events.

ENIL, the company that runs Radio Mirchi, is listed on Indian stock exchanges and has also pursued international operations and acquisitions of additional FM frequencies during successive phases of the government's private FM expansion.

Mirchi Music Awards

The network organises the Mirchi Music Awards, an annual ceremony recognising achievements in Hindi film music. Separate editions are held for regional film music industries, including Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Marathi, Bengali, and Punjabi.

Significance

Radio Mirchi has played a notable role in shaping India's private FM landscape, contributing to the popularisation of RJ-led entertainment formats, large-scale on-ground events, and brand-led music awards. It is frequently cited among the leading networks in listenership and revenue within the Indian radio industry.
