Background

Ramgarh, where the university is situated, is a district headquarters in central Jharkhand and lies along the Damodar valley industrial belt. The region historically had limited options for higher and technical education, with most students travelling to Ranchi, Hazaribagh or Dhanbad for university-level studies. Radha Govind University was set up as part of a wider expansion of private universities in Jharkhand following the state's policy framework permitting self-financed universities to be established by sponsoring trusts and societies.

Academics

As a multidisciplinary institution, the university organises its teaching through faculties and schools that typically cover:

  • Engineering and technology
  • Management and commerce
  • Computer applications and information technology
  • Basic and applied sciences
  • Humanities and social sciences
  • Education and teacher training
  • Paramedical and health sciences

Programmes are offered at the undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels, with degrees awarded under the powers granted to the university by the state legislature.

Governance

As a state private university, Radha Govind University is governed by statutory bodies such as the Board of Governors, the Academic Council and the Board of Studies, headed by a Chancellor and a Vice-Chancellor. Its functioning is regulated by the Government of Jharkhand and its degrees are recognised under the framework of the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Significance

The establishment of the university contributed to the growth of higher education infrastructure in the Ramgarh–Hazaribagh region of Jharkhand, providing local access to professional and technical courses. It is one of several private universities that have come up in Jharkhand since the state was carved out of Bihar in 2000.
