Background

The university was founded by the Government of West Bengal through the Rabindra Bharati Act, 1962, with the intention of preserving and propagating the cultural and intellectual legacy of Rabindranath Tagore. Its principal campus, popularly known as the Jorasanko campus, is situated at the Jorasanko Thakur Bari, the ancestral home of the Tagore family in north Kolkata, where Tagore was born in 1861. The site also houses the Rabindra Bharati Museum, which preserves manuscripts, paintings, and personal artefacts associated with the Tagore family and the Bengal Renaissance.

In addition to the Jorasanko campus, the university operates the Salt Lake (BT Road / EE Block area) campus and the Emerald Bower campus on BT Road, which together accommodate departments of dance, drama, music, visual arts, and various humanities and social science disciplines.

Academic structure

The academic programmes are organised under several faculties, broadly covering:

Through its dedicated centres, archives, and the Rabindra Bhavana-related collections at Jorasanko, it supports scholarly editions, translations, and performance traditions associated with Tagore's literature, music, and dance-dramas. The university plays a prominent role in organising commemorative events around Pochishe Boishakh (Tagore's birth anniversary) and Bengali cultural festivals.
