Background

Vishesh Films, established in 1986, had built a track record in romantic and thriller dramas before venturing into supernatural horror with Raaz. The original film drew inspiration from Hollywood horror conventions and was positioned as a stylised, music-driven horror story aimed at mainstream audiences. Its success encouraged the producers to develop later instalments as standalone stories within the same brand, each featuring a fresh cast and a new setting.

Films in the series

Raaz (2002)

Directed by Vikram Bhatt, the film starred Bipasha Basu, Dino Morea and Malini Sharma. Set largely in Ooty, the story follows a couple whose troubled marriage is tested by a vengeful spirit. The film was a major commercial success and is credited with reviving the Hindi horror genre. Its soundtrack, composed by Nadeem–Shravan with songs such as "Aapke Pyaar Mein" rendered by Alka Yagnik, was a significant hit.

Raaz: The Mystery Continues (2009)

Directed by Mohit Suri, the film featured Emraan Hashmi, Kangana Ranaut and Adhyayan Suman. Despite the title, it shared no narrative link with the original. The story revolves around a young woman experiencing premonitions of a stranger's death. The soundtrack, with composers including Raju Singh and Pranay Rijia, was widely popular, and tracks such as "Maahi" and "Soniyo" became chart hits.

Raaz 3D (2012)

Directed by Vikram Bhatt, this instalment was among the first mainstream Hindi films released in stereoscopic 3D. It starred Bipasha Basu, Emraan Hashmi and Esha Gupta, with a plot centred on a fading actress who turns to black magic to destroy a rising rival. The film performed strongly at the box office and the song "Deewana Kar Raha Hai" was a notable success.

Raaz Reboot (2016)

Directed by Vikram Bhatt, the film starred Emraan Hashmi, Kriti Kharbanda and Gaurav Arora. Largely shot in Romania, it deals with a newly married woman tormented by a malevolent presence in a foreign city. The film received a mixed commercial response.

Recurring themes and style

  • Romantic relationships threatened by supernatural forces.
  • Possession, exorcism, and folkloric elements blended with urban settings.
  • Strong emphasis on melodic soundtracks, often anchoring the marketing of each film.
  • Use of foreign locations (Ooty, Cape Town, Romania) for atmospheric effect.

Significance

The Raaz series is regarded as a landmark in mainstream Hindi horror, demonstrating that the genre could achieve sustained commercial viability when combined with star casts, music and high production values. It helped establish Vishesh Films and Vikram Bhatt as central figures in Hindi horror cinema and influenced subsequent supernatural thrillers produced in Mumbai through the 2000s and 2010s. The franchise also contributed to the careers of actors such as Bipasha Basu and Emraan Hashmi, both of whom became closely associated with the genre.
