Overview

R. N. T. Medical College, formally known as Ravindra Nath Tagore Medical College, is a government medical institution located in Udaipur, Rajasthan. It is one of the prominent state-run medical colleges in the southern Rajasthan region and serves as a major centre for undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, as well as tertiary healthcare for a large population across the Mewar and surrounding tribal belt areas. The college is affiliated with the Rajasthan University of Health Sciences (RUHS), Jaipur, which is the apex body governing medical and health science education across the state.

Background and History

The college was established by the Government of Rajasthan with the objective of expanding access to quality medical education and healthcare services in the southern and tribal districts of the state. Udaipur, being the divisional headquarters of the Udaipur Division, was a natural choice for situating a major government medical institution to cater to the healthcare needs of a geographically dispersed and underserved population. Over the decades, the institution has grown in both academic capacity and clinical infrastructure.

The college is named in honour of Rabindranath Tagore, the Nobel laureate poet, writer, and philosopher, reflecting the broader Indian tradition of naming public institutions after distinguished national figures. It is commonly referred to by its abbreviated form, R. N. T. Medical College, or simply RNTMC, in official and informal usage.

Academics

The college offers the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree as its primary undergraduate programme. Postgraduate medical education is offered across several clinical and non-clinical specialities, leading to the Doctor of Medicine (MD) and Master of Surgery (MS) degrees. Admission to undergraduate programmes is governed by the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG), conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), while postgraduate admissions follow NEET-PG norms as mandated by the National Medical Commission (NMC).

The academic curriculum follows the competency-based medical education (CBME) framework introduced by the NMC, which replaced the older Graduate Medical Education Regulations. The college maintains departments across all major medical disciplines including General Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Orthopaedics, Psychiatry, Radiology, Pathology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Anatomy, and Physiology, among others.

Hospital and Clinical Training

Clinical training is conducted primarily at the Maharana BHUpal Government Hospital, which functions as the teaching hospital attached to R. N. T. Medical College. This hospital is one of the largest government hospitals in southern Rajasthan and handles a significant volume of outpatient, inpatient, emergency, and surgical cases. It serves patients not only from Udaipur city but also from the surrounding districts, including areas with significant Scheduled Tribe populations.

Students undertake clinical postings from the early years of the MBBS programme, gaining exposure to a wide variety of cases including tropical diseases, nutritional disorders, and conditions prevalent in the tribal and rural demographic of the region. The hospital also runs specialised services and is a referral centre for complex cases from district hospitals across the division.

Campus and Facilities

The college campus houses academic blocks, departmental laboratories, a central library, lecture theatres, and administrative offices. Residential facilities are available for students, resident doctors, and faculty. The library maintains a collection of medical textbooks, journals, and digital resources to support academic and research activities. The institution also has facilities for sports and extracurricular engagement for students.

Admissions

Admissions to all programmes are conducted through centralised state and national counselling processes. For MBBS, seats are allocated through the Rajasthan state counselling authority in accordance with NEET-UG merit. A proportion of seats are reserved under applicable state government reservation policies for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes, and other categories as defined by Rajasthan state norms.

Student Life

The student community at R. N. T. Medical College participates in academic societies, cultural events, and medical awareness programmes. The college observes national health days and organises community outreach camps in collaboration with the attached hospital and public health authorities. Student associations are active in organising inter-college events and professional development activities.
