Career
Early breakthrough in Tamil cinema
Madhavan received his first major break in Tamil cinema with Mani Ratnam's romantic drama Alai Payuthey (2000). He followed it with romantic leads in Gautham Vasudev Menon's directorial debut Minnale (2001) and Madras Talkies' production Dumm Dumm Dumm (2001), establishing himself as a leading romantic hero of the early 2000s.
Mid-2000s consolidation
He found wider commercial success with Run (2002), Thambi (2006) and Rendu (2006), and was praised for his performances in Kannathil Muthamittal (2002), Anbe Sivam (2003), Nala Damayanthi (2003) and Aayutha Ezhuthu (2004).
Move into Hindi cinema
Towards the late 2000s, Madhavan extended his presence in Hindi cinema through pivotal roles in three highly successful productions: the patriotic drama Rang De Basanti (2006), Mani Ratnam's biographical film Guru (2007), and the comedy-drama 3 Idiots (2009), which became the highest-grossing Indian film of all time at the time of its release. He simultaneously continued in Tamil films such as Evano Oruvan (2007) and Yavarum Nalam (2009).
Hiatus and comeback
After two box-office hits in Tanu Weds Manu (2011) and Vettai (2012), Madhavan took a three-year break from acting before returning in 2015. His comeback films — the romantic comedy Tanu Weds Manu Returns (2015), the bilingual sports drama Irudhi Suttru (2016) and the crime film Vikram Vedha (2017) — were all critical and commercial successes. His portrayal of a boorish boxing coach in Irudhi Suttru earned him Best Actor honours at the Filmfare, IIFA and SIIMA ceremonies.
Direction and recent work
Madhavan made his directorial debut with Rocketry: The Nambi Effect (2022), in which he also played the Indian rocket scientist Nambi Narayanan. The film received wide acclaim and was awarded the National Film Award for Best Feature Film. He has since appeared in the supernatural thriller Shaitaan (2024) and the spy thrillers Dhurandhar (2025) and Dhurandhar: The Revenge (2026), all of which were major commercial successes; the last of these is reported as his biggest hit to date.
Production and other work
Beyond acting, Madhavan has worked as a screenwriter on several of his own films and has hosted television programmes. He produced Evano Oruvan through Leukos Films and later set up Tricolour Films, under which he co-produced Saala Khadoos (2016), the Hindi version of Irudhi Suttru. He has also been a prominent celebrity endorser for various brands and products.
