Overview
R. G. Kar Medical College and Hospital (RGKMCH) is a public medical college and hospital located in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. The institution traces its origins to 1886, when it was established as a private medical college during the colonial era with the aim of promoting self-sufficiency in medical education and healthcare services. It is noted for having begun as Asia's first private medical college.
The institution functioned as a private establishment for several decades before coming under government administration. On 12 May 1958, the Government of West Bengal assumed management of the college and hospital, placing it within the state's public healthcare and medical education system.
For matters of academic affiliation, RGKMCH was affiliated to the University of Calcutta from 1916 to 2003. Following the establishment of the West Bengal University of Health Sciences in 2003, the college's affiliation was transferred to the new university, which oversees medical and health-science institutions in the state.
RGKMCH is a co-educational institution and is recognised by the National Medical Commission, the statutory body responsible for the regulation of medical education and practice in India. As a public teaching hospital, it combines undergraduate and postgraduate medical training with the provision of clinical services.
