Overview
Pushpa is an Indian Telugu-language action film franchise created and directed by Sukumar, produced by Mythri Movie Makers. The series follows Pushpa Raj, a daily-wage labourer who rises through the ranks of an organised red sanders smuggling syndicate operating in the Seshachalam forests of the Rayalaseema region in Andhra Pradesh. The franchise stars Allu Arjun in the title role, with Rashmika Mandanna as the female lead and Fahadh Faasil as the principal antagonist.
The first instalment, Pushpa: The Rise, released in December 2021, became one of the highest-grossing Indian films of that year and significantly expanded the pan-Indian reach of Telugu cinema. Its sequel, Pushpa 2: The Rule, released in December 2024, set further commercial benchmarks for Indian cinema.

Background
The franchise draws on the real phenomenon of red sanders (Pterocarpus santalinus) smuggling, a form of organised illicit timber trade endemic to the hill forests of southern Andhra Pradesh. Red sanders is a slow-growing endemic tree species protected under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, and is in high demand in East Asian markets. The state of Andhra Pradesh has historically deployed a dedicated Red Sanders Anti-Smuggling Task Force to combat the trade.
Sukumar developed the project after researching the operational hierarchies of smuggling networks, the labour ecosystems around them, and the topography of the Seshachalam range. The film was conceived as a two-part narrative from the outset, with Allu Arjun cast in a deliberate departure from his earlier urban, stylised screen persona.
Films
Pushpa: The Rise (2021)
The first film, subtitled Part 1 – The Rise, was released theatrically on 17 December 2021 in Telugu, with simultaneous dubbed releases in Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi. It introduces Pushpa Raj, an illegitimate son who joins a red sanders cutting gang and steadily climbs the syndicate's hierarchy through audacity, loyalty and operational ingenuity. The story tracks his rise from coolie to syndicate partner, his romance with the village girl Srivalli, and the entry of the new Superintendent of Police, Bhanwar Singh Shekhawat, who becomes his adversary.
The Hindi dubbed version performed strongly in northern Indian markets, expanding the commercial footprint of Telugu cinema in the Hindi belt during the post-pandemic theatrical recovery. The song "Srivalli" and the signature gesture associated with the protagonist became widely recognised in popular culture.
Pushpa 2: The Rule (2024)
The sequel, Pushpa 2: The Rule, released on 5 December 2024, continued the story with Pushpa Raj as the head of the syndicate, navigating the consequences of his earlier confrontation with the police and expanding his operations. The film was again released in multiple Indian languages and recorded a substantial worldwide theatrical gross, becoming among the highest-grossing Indian releases.

Music
Devi Sri Prasad composed the score and soundtracks for both films. Songs from the first film, including "Srivalli", "Oo Antava Oo Oo Antava" and "Saami Saami", achieved widespread popularity across Indian languages, with separate vocal versions recorded for Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi releases. The soundtrack of the second film continued the pattern of multilingual song releases.
Production
Both films were produced by Mythri Movie Makers, founded by Naveen Yerneni and Y. Ravi Shankar, with Muttamsetty Media as a co-producing partner. Cinematography was handled by Polish cinematographer Miroslaw Kuba Brozek. Substantial portions were filmed in forest locations in Andhra Pradesh and on constructed sets, with action sequences designed by multiple choreographers including Peter Hein.
Significance
The franchise is regarded as a notable example of the pan-Indian film phenomenon of the early 2020s, in which Telugu productions targeted the all-India theatrical market through simultaneous multilingual releases. Pushpa: The Rise contributed to the increased visibility of Telugu cinema in the Hindi-speaking market alongside contemporaneous releases such as RRR and KGF: Chapter 2. Allu Arjun received the National Film Award for Best Actor for his performance in Pushpa: The Rise, the first such honour for a performance in a Telugu-language film.
The franchise also drew public attention to the issue of red sanders smuggling and the working conditions of forest labour in Rayalaseema, although it dramatises rather than documents these realities.
