Overview
Punjabi University is a collegiate state public university located in Patiala, Punjab, India. It was established on 30 April 1962, and is the second university in the world to be named after a language, after the Hebrew University of Israel.
The university was originally conceived as a unitary multi-faculty teaching and research institution. Its founding purpose centred on the development and enrichment of the Punjabi language and culture, while remaining responsive to the wider social and educational requirements of the state.
Over time, Punjabi University has grown into a collegiate institution, with academic activity spread across teaching departments and affiliated colleges. While its initial focus was the promotion of Punjabi language and literature, it has since broadened to cover a range of disciplines in the humanities, sciences and professional studies.
